The Spanish garrison decides to flee the city, which Drake sacks, leaving none of the 250+ homes standing. Following the attack, Spain considers abandoning the city of St. Augustine. June 26, 1586 Sir Francis Drake, having sailed up the Southeastern coast, arrives at Roanoke Island.
