June 25, 1564 Rene de Laudonniere lands at the mouth of the St. John's River and begins to fortify the position with a palisade. This will become Fort Caroline September 4, 1564 Captain Bourdet, a privateer, arrives at Fort Caroline.   Rene Goulaine De Laudonniere November 8, 1564 Captain Bourdet sets sail, heading south. He will surrender to Spanish authorities in Havana and betray de Laudonniere, revealing the location of Fort Caroline December 8, 1564 Unhappy with the prospect of work and near starvation, men under the command of Rene de Laudonniere leave Fort Caroline and head for France.
