State Constitution of 1777
Each of the colonies were urged by the Continental Congress to establish state constitutions, in effect officially taking power from the royal governors and bodies established by the king. A convention was assembled in Savannah and a document crafted, which was approved unanimously. It was never given to the populace to approve for a number of reasons, one of which was the large number of Loyalists living here. Wilkes County was officially created in the document.
