Name derivation:Named in honor of Sgt. William Jasper, a hero of Fort Moultrie who died during the battle of Savannah. Jasper, during a charge on a British entrenchment around the city of Savannah took the colors from a fallen comrade and advanced under heavy fire. He was mortally wounded during this advance.
