The eye of Hurricane Opal reaches Georgia. While in the state the hurricane is downgraded to a tropical storm, then a tropical depression. Five people die from the hurricane, and many more are injured.

Residents of southwest Georgia began to take notice of this Gulf of Mexico hurricane when a Tropical Storm Warning was issued by the National Weather Service at 7 p.m. on October 3. The storm turned north and gradually increased its speed, taking aim at the Florida coast.
