Fayette County, Georgia
Name derivation:Named in honor of the Marquis de LaFayette (also spelled La Fayette), noted French national, who, using his own money recruited an army to support the Continentals under George Washington. Facing a superior force, LaFayette successfully trapped Cornwallis at Yorktown and held him there for six weeks while Washington journeyed south from New York.
